Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by persistent, intrusive thoughts, urges, or images (known as obsessions) that cause significant distress. In an attempt to alleviate this distress, individuals with OCD feel compelled to engage in repetitive behaviors or mental acts (called compulsions or rituals), such as handwashing, checking things repeatedly, or counting. These obsessions and compulsions can be time-consuming, often taking more than an hour per day, and can significantly disrupt daily life, including social interactions and work.
In 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as a treatment option for OCD, particularly for individuals whose symptoms have not responded well to medications or psychotherapy. TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain, such as the prefrontal cortex, which plays a key role in mood regulation and anxiety.
There are various TMS protocols for treating OCD, including repetitive TMS (rTMS) and deep TMS (dTMS). The latter can reach deeper brain tissues and may offer additional therapeutic benefits.
